Cocos Hammerheads

Welcome to Cocos Island

Price band: £££££

Jacques Cousteau deemed it "the most beautiful island in the world." The Cocos Island are an oasis lying 300 miles south west of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean. You’re likely to encounter large schools of hammerhead sharks and dense populations of pelagic and reef fish, turtles, eels, starfish and even a rare frogfish. On the Cocos Islands the fish population has been allowed to grow in harmony with the natural balance of the food chain, which is why such a great diversity and quantity of sea-life is prevalent. It's probably the best place in the world to go diving with sharks and there are no crowds of other divers.

Dive Sites

Alcyone: Abundant sea life makes this site one of the island’s signature dives. Mantas, White-tipped Sharks, Whale Sharks, Silky Sharks, Black-tipped Sharks, and hundreds of schooling Hammerheads, are everywhere. An underwater plateau, discovered by Cousteau when he visited Cocos Island, is home to a variety of sharks.

Dirty Rock: Located near Wafer Bay, Dirty Rock is an impressive and exciting dive, noted as one of our guests’ favourites. Whale Sharks are often sighted here, and Dirty Rock is perhaps best known for the hundreds of Marble Rays and huge schools of Jacks that can be seen here. A swim through one of the schools is definitely worth the trip!

Dos Amigos Grande y Pequeña are two of Cocos Island’s best known dive sites. In the southern part of Cocos, these two islands showcase the excitement that only Cocos Island can deliver.

Dos Amigos Grande is better known for its huge arch, a swim-through so big that an entire diving group can move through it at the same time. Marble Rays swimming among divers, Eagle Rays feeding or mating, and schooling Hammerheads are typical scenarios at this memorable dive site.

Dos Amigos Pequeña is another fantastic dive, where you can see Manta Rays, big Silkys and Galapagos Sharks. Huge Yellow Fin Tuna are often seen swimming out in the deep blue.

Manuelita is awesome, offering a variety of diving experiences all at the same location! In the shallow area, you can see hundreds of White-tipped Sharks during the night dives.

Cleaning stations allow divers to come face-to-face with schools of Hammerheads. Schools of Snappers and Jacks are everywhere. And in the deeper area, hiding places abound for divers wanting to watch all the action. A magical dive, day or night!

Itinerary

Eight Day and Ten Day Charters

The Okeanos Aggressor offers two exiting itineraries, both depart from the western coast port town of Puntarenas.

Eight-day charters are Saturday to Sunday with five days of diving and ten-day trips are Tuesday to Friday with seven days of diving. Transfers are provided from the Alta Hotel and Marriott Courtyard in San Jose on the day of departure. The scenic two-hour air-conditioned bus ride to Puntarenas showcases some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful views. An overnight stay is required in San Jose prior to the charter.

Once aboard, the 300 mile journey to Cocos begins. Dolphins and whales often escort the Aggressor on the voyage, which takes approximately

30 hours. The trip gives divers plenty of time to prepare their gear and their hearts for the magnificent creatures awaiting their arrival!

Throughout the week, you will dive from roomy dive tenders. Most dive sites have mild currents. Between dives, the chef will treat you to scrumptious local and international cuisine. If conditions permit, guests are shuttled to the island for a land hike and swim in one of the lush island’s many waterfalls.

Checkout time is 7:30 a.m. on the morning of departure. After arriving back on the mainland, the crew will transfer you and your luggage with the group to one of the host hotels in San Jose and the airport.

Guests will arrive in San Jose late morning; therefore, departing flights should be scheduled after 12:30 p.m.

Itinerary may vary due to weather conditions and yacht location.
